Ned Fleming to me:

Many years back, here in New Zealand, one of the major hotel chains
(_the_ only national hotel chain?? I was a bit too young to pay
sufficient attention though I seem to recall that they had HANZ printed
on their glasses and this stood for Hotel Association of New Zealand)
voluntarily "banned" glass glasses in their public bars for (allegedly)
similar safety reasons,

It amazes me to even hear of a hotel bar fight, they're so sedate.
Fights in stand-alone bars or taverns, sure, but I can't recall
hearing of a hotel bar fight.

Ahhh -- a cultural moment...

I translated "jug" for our North American readers, but neglected that
"hotel" here is as commonly used to refer to what North (or maybe just
US) Americans would more normally call a "bar" or "tavern". The hotels
I was referring to would mainly be of the kind Ned refers to as "stand-
alone bars or taverns".

No doubt they do occur in Las Vegas and other such shit-holes. (What
happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.)

Hotel bar fights: another reason to avoid New Zealand.

If you've ever seen "Once Were Warriors" you'd know the kind of hotel
and hotel bar fight I was referring to (and lest anyone thinks those
scenes are overdone or the setting unrealisitc, the main "pub scenes"
in the movie were shot in the public bar of an infamous "hotel" in
Auckland).

_If_ that kind of thing were at all common here it certainly should be
a reason to avoid us, but that's the (extreme) exception, and the kind
of place no vaguely sane tourist would ever venture to (a bit like much
of Kansas??? 8-) ).

Regards,

Nick FitzGerald
