I would think that you had a real human on the other end of the net.
Let's face it, labor is VERY cheap. If you can get people to massively
break captchas for less than $0.01 a piece, I am sure that you can find
a lot of warm bodies that would work this scam for a small percentage of
any take.

If you think about it, they were trying to hit you up for $500. If the
"bot-person" on the other end was to get 10% of the take for having
successfully socially engineered you, that would be great money ($50) in
many places. Even if they only whacked one person a week, they could
live in style on that income!

Finally, warm bodies are much more flexible and responsive than any bot
would be, IMHO. I simply cannot see this being a bot.
