The 'listed building' system is complex (got to keep the civil servants
busy somehow) and varies in detail between the individual countries of
the UK. England & Wales have different rules from Scotland, while
Northern Ireland is different from both of them. In particular England &
Wales have a 'Grade 2*' category which doesn't seem to have an
equivalent in Scotland or Northern Ireland.

Basically, the listing grades are as follows :

Grade 1 : High historical importance. Usually owners will not be allowed
to make any kind of alterations to this type of building and will be
required to keep it in a good state of repair. Public financing (in the
form of grants from English National Heritage) may be available for
urgent structural repairs.

Grade 2 : Historically important but considerably less so than grade 1.
No public financing is available for repairs and the level of statutory
control on alterations is considerably lower than for grade 1 listed
buildings. Owners still have a duty to maintain the building where
possible, however it's far more likely that a grade 2 building will fall
into disrepair and be demolished due to lack of finances for essential
repairs.

There's much more detailed information available online, start here if

Any of you Brits lurking on the list able to explain what Grade II means?

I'm *guessing* either a label regarding its historical significance, or
its state of (dis)repair, but it's unclear whether lower numbers (Grade I)
are better or worse...
