If you know anything about games between Celtic and Rangers, you will
know that his status as a referee in the Scottish Premier League makes
him very suited to mediating disputes where violence is a real
possibility.

However, I think that the fact that he's a professor of Geology as his
day job is the primary consideration, and his referee status merely
makes him the most suited among peers in this case.
