One of these systems has been installed in my neighborhood in Boston. 
Hmm, I probably should try to get some photos of the microphones.  I
remember that the roll-out didn't go very smoothly.  The city thought that
the vendor was taking too long.  More here:

I have heard about similar trials in major metropolitan cities
(Los Angeles, Chicago) going back a few years actually:
