One of the nation's leading cybersecurity experts has been named Verizon
Inc.'s executive director of government affairs for national security
policy.

Marcus Sachs, formerly Washington head of SRI International's Computer
Science Laboratory, was named Tuesday in a statement from Verizon.

In the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Sachs was appointed
by President Bush as director of communication infrastructure protection on
the National Security Council staff. He later became the Department of
Homeland Security's first cyber program director, in which post he
developed the initial concept for the department's U.S. Computer Emergency
Readiness Team, or US-CERT.

Sachs will represent Verizon on cybersecurity policy matters in government
task forces, industry working groups, formal committees and industry trade
associations, at the national level in Washington, said the statement.
