http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/12/14/kaspersky_update_glitch/ Updated Problems in updating Kaspersky anti-virus software have led to widespread reports of machines locking up. Windows PCs attempting to get the latest anti-virus definition files display the message "previous application launch failed" before becoming stuck in an endless loop. The problem, which cropped up on Thursday, is affecting many users of Kaspersky's anti-virus software package, according to forum postings <http://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php?showtopic=55045&pid=497472&mode=thread ed&start=#entry497472> . It seems that the update freezes 26 per cent of the way through the process. Thereafter machines operate at a snail's pace, forcing users to reboot. Killing avp.exe in Task Manager reportedly stops the crash and relaunch loop. Temporarily disabling updates is also being suggested as a temporary workaround. However, others report that neither disabling updates nor rolling back is effective. .
