An email from my cousin in Caracas. Definitely about security, but not very fun.. let me know if any of you have even heard of this story in the US media.. -JP ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: <munged> Date: May 28, 2007 Subject: rctv Hello family, As you may know, RCTV, the first tv station that was founded in Venezuela and also the first tv station that goes out of air in Venezuelan history, it was pulled out of air last night after 53 years of airing. The reason was that their petition for renewal of their license to keep airing, which expired yesterday, was rejected by the goverment, because they became an annoyance for its criticism. The excuse of the goverment for not renewing their license was that them, RCTV, participated in the 2002 coup and general strike. But other tv stations, as Venevision and Televen, which also participated openly in the coup, got their licenses renewed because they made a truce with the goverment about a year ago. RCTV did not so they paid the price for all, which is unffair. RCTV was until yesterday the most widely viewed tv station nation wide. They've always have more than 50% of the share of all venezuelan tv stations which sum nearly a dozen. More than 3000 workers, including the most loved actors, actreesses, journalists, etc, of the country are part of RCTV. Many people today is sad, including myself, as everyone in Venezuela grew up watching this tv station. Today there are manifestations in the streets of Caracas in support of RCTV and there is only one channel transmiting it (Globovision) and the rest of the private channels are not, I guess because they are affraid of getting the same destiny as RCTV received yesterday, so they are censoring themselves. But not the artists of those channels. Right in this moment, artists of those other tv stations are protesting for what happened to RCTV in the streets. And another bunch of them are now live in Globovision, a news tv channel that, as RCTV, is a pain to the goverment. They are saying that if the owners of those other tv stations are censoring themselves, they are not, and that they are against the goverment decision. Another thing that happened today is that all the executives of Venevision, one of the channels that made truce with the goverment, and that was forgiven by the goverment and therefore its license renewed, resigned today because they do not accept that this tv station do not support RCTV. So that is how things are here. Here you can see the very last minutes of RCTV last night when airing live from their studios. You can see workers, includding artists, journalists, and others crying, praying, saying goddbye to their large audience, then the national anthem sang by them exactly at 11:55pm which ended at 11:59pm, then a black screen for seconds and then the entry of the goverment tv station TVes, the confirmation of the promise of the goverment to get RCTV out of air. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-F3WNdwRwuM The video is completely in spanish but you dont need to understand the language in order to feel how sad was that. Take a look at it Please also let me know what is being said up there about this. <anonymous> _______________________________________________ Fun and Misc security discussion for OT posts. https://linuxbox.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/funsec Note: funsec is a public and open mailing list.
