                ^^ Important. :)

An overseas computer hacker has managed to wipe out nearly 100 New Zealand
websites.

What of the hundreds of others "wiping out" thousands every day?

And thousands of *people* are being "wiped out" every week in Darfur.

But the news media, being the news media, has to rate the stories in importance,
because there's only so much room on the "front page" (equally true for the
dead-tree and electron versions). And one of the factors is an inverse-square
function of distance from the readers. "Same town" even a fender-bender
car crash is interesting, "same country" it needs to be a bit bigger,
and "same solar system" only draws the attention of geeks unless an interstellar
invasion fleet is sighted (as the Weekly World News reminds us every few weeks).
