Forgent settles JPEG patent claims, keeps suing

11/3/2006 12:08:10 PM, by Nate Anderson

Forgent Networks, owner of the (in)famous '672 patent that allegedly
covered parts of the JPEG compression format, has announced the
resolution of all its legal cases based on the patent. While the
company initially said that it could not comment on details of the
settlements, it later announced that it had received $8 million in
compensation.

This is far less than the company was hoping for, but at this point,
it's probably willing to take what it can get. After acquiring patent
owner Compression Labs several years ago, Forgent approached digital
camera and PC makers about paying royalties on the '672 patent for
incorporating the JPEG algorithm into their products. Most refused,
and Forgent filed lawsuits in 2004.

Earlier this year, some of the claims made in the patent were rejected
upon review by the Patent Office, making the company's legal case less
certain. While a few million dollars isn't much to show for several
years of litigation, the company claims to have made more than $110
million from the patent over the course of its lifespan.
