Took them long enough.

They only integrated it with the OS in the first place because they
didn't like that Netscape was releasing a product for free that was
popular.  It has always been extremely stupid to integrate a web browser
with the operating system so much so that the web browser could not be
removed.

Keep in mind this was a marketing driven decision, not a security one
(obviously). The reason IE was embedded so far in the OS that it
couldn't be removed is that Bill knew that a judge was going to order
him to remove it. When a Judge ordered him to remove IE and he pointed
to the fact that he couldn't, it didn't seem like such a bad thing
(except from that little aspect we call security).

Enter 10 years of remote code executions (and counting :-)
