From DesMoinesRegister.com: [snip] Students guard against hackers High school teams try to keep their networks protected at Iowa State. By BRIAN ANTHONY HERNANDEZ REGISTER STAFF WRITER May 21, 2006 A fire alarm sent students scrambling to a parking lot around 7 a.m. Saturday at the state's first Cyber Defense Competition in Ames. The students were nearing the tail end of the 15-hour event, in which teams of four to six students acted as a security crew for a dot-com startup company, when the alarm sounded. The teams, however, didn't know that the fire alarm was part of the competition. While the competitors waited outside to resume protecting their security networks, a group of Iowa State University students posing as hackers tampered with the teams' cables and databases at the university's research center. "It was a test," said Doug Jacobson, coordinator of the event, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at ISU and director for the Information Assurance Center. "One team was smart enough to have put their screensavers on lock mode." Information technology professionals, he said, deal with these types of situations every day, and it's something he wants students to encounter and learn from before they enter the IT work force.
