I have seen reports of one elderly gentleman steadfastly refusing to
believe that "his good friend Barrister John Aide" would never rip him
off, even when it was the CIA/FBI telling him his money was gone.

Ignorance may be bliss, but denial is heaven (or a river in Egypt, I
forget which).
