The semaphore line preceded the electrical telegraph. It was faster than post-riders for bringing a message over long distances, but far more expensive and less private than the electrical telegraph, which replaced it.
I think the "less private" aspect plays a part in the plot of "The Count of Monte Cristo." ====================== (quote inserted randomly by Pegasus Mailer) rslade () vcn bc ca slade () victoria tc ca rslade () sun soci niu edu Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. - President Dwight Eisenhower http://victoria.tc.ca/techrev or http://sun.soci.niu.edu/~rslade _______________________________________________ Fun and Misc security discussion for OT posts. https://linuxbox.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/funsec Note: funsec is a public and open mailing list.
