I believe there are several methods through which the issue can be
solved and Microsoft probably chose the best way given all the
additional information they had at their disposal.

I've now updated and rebooted four systems here, with and without
uninstalling Ilfak's patch. No issues whatsoever. Dual panels on
NVidia and ATI cards as well.

A happy end to the story imho.
