It is hard to estimate how acute the real danger is today, but
disabling hardware is certainly a possibility nowadays. IMHO, the
biggest obstacle is the level of technical knowledge required to
achieve a successful attack. It is quite high, and people having the
necessary skills are likely to be extremely busy.
