Re: Call for moderation

Right, so the machinery is already in place to partially moderate the
list in **special circumstances**. It is interesting that flaming and
rudeness are not given as examples of such circumstances, since flame
wars are very common on lists in general and on Full Disclosure in
particular, and since most people agree that they are bad. If the
charter meant for moderation as being called for now by some people,
it would have said it. People who are calling for moderation are
saying that the list should be moderated above and beyond what is
allowed by the charter. I think that moderation is a bad idea, but if
it is to be done, then the charter must surely be modified first.

Which, in turn, will begin a precedent of moderation that will
ultimately undermine the purpose of the list far more than it is being
undermined presently by rudeness, flaming, and flagrantly off-topic
posts.

Free discourse can be annoying. I think that we should not give up
freedom for comfort, nonetheless.

One quite viable option for those wishing moderation is to unsubscribe
from the list and read the list archives periodically. Of course, then
their posts will be moderated, but *they* shouldn't have a problem
with that...

Moderating lists tends to slow things down but I have seen other security
related lists begin to get out of hand and moderation was enforced. It
would be nice if people can just get along. Or not get along but for
shorter periods of time.

There is a charter for this list at
http://lists.grok.org.uk/full-disclosure-charter.html
(which is in the mailing list sig).

 A couple of sections:

 <charter>
 Moderation & Management

The [Full-Disclosure] list is unmoderated. Typically posting will be
restricted to members only, however the administrators may choose to accept
submissions from non-members based on individual merit and relevance.

It is expected that the list will be largely self-policing, however in
special circumstances (eg spamming, misappropriation) then offending members
may be removed from the list by the management.

 Acceptable Content

Any information pertaining to vulnerabilities is acceptable, for instance
announcement and discussion thereof, exploit techniques and code, related
tools and papers, and other useful information.

Gratuitous advertisement, product placement, or self-promotion is
forbidden. Disagreements, flames, arguments, and off-topic discussion should
be taken off-list wherever possible.
 </charter>

Does anyone know if they have actually removed people from the list?

 Regarding some previous threads.

Some people just show how low they are !

This is why we need some form of "Code of Conduct" or even better change to
a moderated list.

Otherwise the whole list just gets ruined and will ndeteriate over time.

Heres a call for moderation before it gets too late.

Anything that is too off topic or inflamatory should get junked.
