In addition, if you're paying RedHat money, you're not paying for the software, you're paying for a maintenance contract - what you're getting there is a copy of the software packaged so it can be installed easily, the ability to call RedHat for technical support, and updates. If you dig around, you can find all the pieces you need to do a totally free Linux-from-scratch from RedHat - but you'll have to do it on your own, as they won't help or even answer the phone. If you order the software on CD, they attach a small media charge, also permitted by the GPL.
