if you are using routers from cisco then there is a feature for this called network-based application recognition seems to be in the later versions of IOS after 12.3(8)T for most routers more info here http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6616/products_qanda_item09186a00800a3ded.shtml haven't tried it myself but it may be of use
