bandwidth utilization (40-50Mbps) however any feedback about how the
Realtek network cards perform in the Fortigate would be greatly appreciated.

This one is very hard to answer. From my experience, there are at
least 5 different models of the 8139 chips. Some will work well, and
some will give you a max throughput of around 9Kbps and can even
lockup under heavy load.

As a rule of thumb, I try to avoid that chip for servers.

of any competing products I would like be very interested to know about
them.

I have heard both good and bad feedback on Fortinet products. You might
want to check the Focus-IDS mailing list at securityfocus. People there
might give you better pointers.
