Not to disagree with you on ActiveX et al, but with Microsoft's
representatives swearing under oath that they can't remove IE from
Windows with out breaking Windows, suggests to me that *they* considor
IE a core component to Windows

Well we all know why *that* is- it doesn't discredit the statement at all.
