Tenable Network Security would like to invite readers of the
focus-ids mailing list to download and try the NeVO passive
vulnerability scanner which is now available as a BETA release
for Windows XP and Windows 2000.

NeVO is a commercial software product which 'sniffs' your
vulnerabilities 24x7. It learns your network's systems, clients,
applications and vulnerabilities through passive monitoring.
With NeVO, you can turn almost any NIDS or firewall into a
device which collects security information with no impact to
the systems being analyzed. You can also run NeVO on your
laptop, visit your favorite network places with your favorite
protocols, and discover a wide variety of security information
about where you visit. Visiting a variety of open source and
commercial security web sites with NeVO running is extremely
enlightening and sometimes entertaining.

Tenable has been shipping NeVO for Linux and FreeBSD since
October of 2003 and has recently completed a Microsoft port.
This BETA of NeVO for XP is fully compatible with the current
NeVO passive vulnerability signature set and also includes an
intuitive user interface with real-time notification of
observed vulnerabilities.

To download NeVO, please obtain it from:
http://www.tenablesecurity.com/newt/NeVO_XP_Beta.zip

To install NeVO, unzip the download and run the setup.exe
program. This BETA will expire in early April, but is otherwise
fully functional and not crippled in any way. You can deploy
it on a live network and get an extremely good idea of the
network's vulnerabilities without having to conduct a full
active scan.

For user's with wireless NICs, NeVO may not be able to place
your interface into promiscuous mode. There is an 'options'
setting in the NeVO user interface to disable promiscuous mode.

Also, when NeVO for XP is installed, it defaults to looking at
all traffic. If you happen to place NeVO in front of a busy
web server, NeVO will perform passive vulnerability analysis on
all visitors. To avoid this, use the 'options' setting in the
NeVO user interface to limit which networks NeVO should focus
on.
