I think that Gartner Group themselves have become a victim of their own
"Hype Circles" and people are continually NOT listening to them like
they once did.  People are arming themselves with knowledge and this is
what Gartner is afraid of....imagine not needing a consultant company to
tell you how to do something any longer! oh my! 

On the flip side...yes, I am defensive because I spent the last 4 years
of my life devoted to IDS/IPS and have seen the enormous steps taken
from infacy to today.  To have someone slap me down and tell me my
current lifes work is dead hurts...I won't stand by and allow that to
happen.  My experience with NIDS and HIDS have been bumpy but I can
promise you that I have caught and fixed more things than I could have
even imagined, and been able to impress even the strongest of Network
sysadmins with the simplicity of IDS's.
