Add to that, The Cloud. I finally realized that The Cloud is a good thing. What it means is that those who cannot do IT are going to stop trying. If they can't
do system administration or system operations, they're going to step away
from the plate and let Amazon or Google or whoever do it. Overall, this is
probably for the best.

That leaves the home users. Shiny eye-grabbing mac stuff and iPad stuff are
going to continue to encroach, there, since Microsoft has gone out of its way
to emphasize further how unmanageable Windows systems are. That
stuff is going to consumerize more and more. Overall, that is definitely
for the best.

It looks like computing is subspecializing and the top players have enough
space between them and the rest of the pack that they can command
a premium price - or drive the competition out of business by offering the
same thing at a discounted price. We'll probably see continued pressure
on security until The Cloud has absorbed the customer base that it is
going to absorb, at which point there will be internal jockeying over
service levels and prices but by then the customers will be locked in to
whatever strata they are likely to remain in. That's also as it should be.
