The trouble with a single dominant monoculture is that it does increase the damage caused by a single hole. See blaster, and the long thread which was spawned by *that* on this list.
If I was to interpret what Marcus is saying without reading his article, it would be that the look and feel of Windows works and as people have such a high familiarity with it, it would be better if it was also found on Unix rather than GNOME/X/whatever. Having a consistant interface does not mean you have to have the same code underneath or any sort of monoculture beyond the look and feel of the UI.
