If your server should offer only information for the public (eg. webserver) i see no reason, why you should not place it outside the firewall, because in that case, there is nothing what you want to protect on that server, if someone really break in.
I would suggest that you may wish to consider the availability and integrity of all three of the server, its configuration and the information that you offer up to the public.
Add to that the possibility of it being abused as a jump-off point as part of an attack on some other Internet-connected system.
