securing .NET

A client is getting ready to move to a .NET based platform for internet presence. The model talks about having multiple layers - presentation, business logic, data. Since all the servers in the various layers are members of a single .NET AD domain, they need to "chat" extensively, using multiple protocols. They can also use HTTP through SOAP etc. How would one go about securing the communications between these machines. A traditional firewall seems lacking, since many functions in .NET can travel through HTTP. Are you familiar with any device(s) that can control what is being transmitted inside the .NET protocols? Any success stories with those?
