Any ideas?

Not sure this has much to do with firewalls per se, but you are aware that
satellite-based communications have a relatively high latency (and some a high
bandwidth * latency cross-product, which corresponds to a lot of data being
"en transit") compared to more common types of connections, right?

You'll need to _measure_ bandwidth and latency seperately in order to see
what's really going on. Some systems or protocols make assumptions about low
latency for out-of-band signaling and/or error reporting, which doesn't work
so well under circumstances where those assumptions do not hold true.
