This is to announce a special session at the National Information Systems Security Conference (NISSC) next month in Crystal City, VA. I'm sending this e-mail because the session is not listed in the preliminary program. Title: Internet Cryptography Presented by Richard E. Smith, Secure Computing Corporation Tuesday October 6, 1:30 to 5:00 pm NISSC Track H Abstract: Modern cryptographic techniques are the only practical tools for protecting Internet messages from forgery or theft. Based on the recent book, "Internet Cryptography," this special double session will take a goal-oriented, nonmathematical look at choosing and using cryptographic products to protect network traffic. Today's Internet security products can establish Virtual Private Networks, points of sale on the World Wide Web, and tamper-resistant electronic mail. However, the wrong choice could complicate day to day operations and increase security risks. It is not difficult to choose the right techniques and products when they reflect real operational needs as well as security objectives. Participants will learn how to evaluate products and techniques against their real needs and to assess the practical risks of practical solutions. Unfortunately, the scheduling poses a problem for people interested in practical, user oriented cryptography, because there are several relevant talks scheduled at the same time as this session. I like to run fairly informal sessions, so I expect people will pop in and out, particularly between Parts 1 and 2. Just be quiet if you have to move while I'm talking, OK?
