Need help for firewall

I wanna install a packet filtering but all i installed for the moment
was with a proxy . 
Now i wanna a packet filtering only . 
So i would like to know is how to do it .

I'm under linux and i'm gonna have the new solaris.
I have a P166 with 128 Mo of RAM .

Can u tell me if i need two network cards like with a proxy ? and how
to configure it . 

for the moment my network is like that

    |firewall|
    ----------

I use IP masquerading .

PS io would like to know to if it's really interesting to use a cache
manager like squid on a small network of 5 computers .
