Josef,

 If you've got a VPN in place, then that's going to secure the packets 
across the public network.  If you don't then I'd recommend you use the 
multi-protocol net-lib that comes with SQL.  This supports encryption 
of the packet data - this encryption can be forced at the server end, 
so that clients who haven't got it set aren't allowed to get through.
