In general I agree with your points, but I believe that sometimes is
actually good to keep the count. It's not about shooting back, it's
about knowing your enemy. After all, how many independent hackers are
going to mark your systems as a target simultaneously? Furthermore, how
many of them will leave you alone, just because they failed a couple of
times? Keeping count could help finding their attack patterns, specially
when they are inside hackers. And you might be able to track them down,
before they come up with something good enough that can take you out.
