Jerry, Thank you for taking the step and the courage to respond in the manner in which you did. This is obviously a very sensitive topic to many, and I hope we can all continue to focus as much as possible on the facts of the current matter. There are plenty of news articles and blogs about this how COVID-19 is causing negative perceptions or actions towards certain demographics. Here's a CDC encouragement that touches a little on this topic: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/about/share-facts.html?CDC_AA_refVal=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cdc.gov%2Fcoronavirus%2F2019-ncov%2Fabout%2Fshare-facts-stop-fear.html Regards, Orlando --- *#CyberAware #Privacy #IdentityTheft * Shred it or regret it! I think it is inappropriate to speak to the origination point of this virus or to make any insinuations on China as a whole - it does not add to the contextual conversation surrounding the potential impact to travel, both nationally and internationally and existing concerns to attending a conference. The larger concern is the ease with which this virus can spread, the incubation period before symptoms may show, and the number of people that are in close proximity. Recommending a focus on social distancing would be more worthwhile than listing rates of infection for a cruise ship. I have plans to attend Educause SPC and plan on going at this time. The decision will be easier to make as we get closer to the date and we see what kind of impact and spread are occurring. Just make sure to purchase refundable tickets. *-------* *Jerry TylutkiInformation Security Officer* *Hamilton College* *(315) 859-4289 -- office* ******The contents of this email are CONFIDENTIAL. I don’t believe there is any cause for concern at this time. The current infection rate is artificially low and mortality rate artificially low due to how early we are in the outbreak. There have been 9 deaths in Washington state, all with underlying health issues. The cluster of cases in California are all connected to a cruise ship. 50% of all CONFIRMED cases of COVID-19 have completely recovered. This doesn’t include any cases where a person was infected, didn’t know it, or wasn’t tested. Cruise ships are a good cross section of the population. Of the 2,500 on the cruise ship off California, only 21 have symptoms. The man that just died had underlying health problems. It is certainly a situation worth monitoring, but I don’t see anything that tells me anything needs to change. The virus originated in an area of China where there is a dense population and VERY unsanitary meat markets. There is a reason that all these outbreaks are originating in China. *From: *The EDUCAUSE Security Community Group Listserv < SECURITY () LISTSERV EDUCAUSE EDU> *Date: *Thursday, March 5, 2020 at 9:57 AM *To: *SECURITY () LISTSERV EDUCAUSE EDU <SECURITY () LISTSERV EDUCAUSE EDU> *Subject: *Re: [SECURITY] [EXT] [SECURITY] Conference in April -- concerns?
