Re: Cybersecurity Internship Program for Higher Ed

Yes, we just started our program back up. However, it's out of our Operations department instead of through Security,
but it's really the same thing. I just needed more help in operational security.

Instead of paying the students through work-study, we give them formal internships for college credit. This is a
partnership between the department that is offering the credit and OIT. Students work during the semester for 10hrs a
week for a 3 credit course. The three positions I currently have as interns:

  *   Splunk development
  *   Vulnerability Scanning and Patching
  * Configuration Management (SCCM type stuff)

The students are really interested in these because they can list it as a job and get course credit. There is an
educational component to it too, where the student must have a faculty advisor and produce reports during the semester
and at the end of the semester on what they've learned. I developed the program and passed it through legal, financial
office, HR and the department itself.

I'll be more than happy to send our paperwork on if anyone is interested.

Subject: [SECURITY] Cybersecurity Internship Program for Higher Ed

Hello everyone,

We are looking into starting an official cybersecurity internship program here at University of Miami for our student.
We currently have work-study students that work part-time during the semester, but we wanted to create a short, 6-7
week intensive program for students to intern under our information security office and gain real-world experience.

Do any of your universities have experience with something like this (and are willing to let me pick your brain on it)?
Do you have any advice moving forward/anything you wish you had known at the start of the program?

Best regards,
Ashley Valentijn, M.S.
