November IAM Online: Going Passwordless at Stanford

Wednesday, November 13, 2019

Capping a multi-year effort to transition away from passwords, Stanford University has deployed the final component:
client-side X.509 certificates that strongly authenticate both the user and the device. This authentication mechanism
is integrated with the university's Shibboleth and RADIUS servers for web SSO, VPN, and 802.1X wireless.

Michael Duff, chief information security officer at Stanford, will describe why the university took this approach and
the lessons learned along the journey. He will also discuss the underlying systems and key design decisions made during
the six-year project. Join us to hear this success story of "safer and simpler computing," where security and user
experience are markedly improved simultaneously.
