Dear Colleagues,

It’s just a few months into 2017 and our Higher Education Information Security Council (HEISC) volunteers are busy
planning new community activities and resources for the year. Here are just a few highlights.

Since January, we have posted a dozen guest blogs by community members and graduate students in the EDUCAUSE Review
Security Matters column<http://er.educause.edu/columns/security-matters> as part of Data Privacy Month. You can also
review the recording, slides, and transcript for Cindy Compert’s 1/26 webinar: Big Data: What’s the Big
Deal?<http://events.educause.edu/educause-live/webinars/2017/big-data-whats-the-big-deal> If your campus hosted a Data
Privacy Day<http://www.educause.edu/dpd> event in January or February, we’d love to hear from you.

The 2017 Security Professionals Conference<http://www.educause.edu/sec17> program is now available online. Early-bird
registration ends April 3. In addition to keynotes from Jack Daniel and Michelle Dennedy, there are seminars and track
sessions on the latest infosec and privacy topics affecting higher ed and lots of opportunities to network with your
peers.

Several new security and privacy-related articles are now available in EDUCAUSE Review:

  * Create a Security Operations Center on Your
Campus<http://er.educause.edu/articles/2017/1/create-a-security-operations-center-on-your-campus>
  * Consenting Adults? Privacy in an Age of Liberated Learning
Data<http://er.educause.edu/articles/2017/1/consenting-adults-privacy-in-an-age-of-liberated-learning-data>
  *   Information Security: Risky Business<http://er.educause.edu/articles/2017/1/information-security-risky-business>
(part of the 2017 Top 10 IT Issues resource
hub<https://www.educause.edu/research-and-publications/research/top-10-it-issues>)
  * Combating Security Uncertainty with Information Security
Awareness<http://er.educause.edu/articles/2017/1/combating-security-uncertainty-with-information-security-awareness>

Some infosec resources from the EDUCAUSE Center for Analysis and Research (ECAR) are now freely available to all
EDUCAUSE members. A research bulletin on data breaches in higher ed was also recently published.

  *   CDS Spotlight: Information
Security<https://library.educause.edu/resources/2016/8/cds-spotlight-information-security>
  * The Successful Security Awareness Professional: Foundational Skills and Continuing
Education<https://library.educause.edu/resources/2016/8/the-successful-security-awareness-professional-foundational-skills-and-continuing-ed-strategies>
  * Higher Education Information Security Awareness
Programs<https://library.educause.edu/resources/2016/8/higher-education-information-security-awareness-programs>
  * Searching for a Smoking Gun, Chasing a Silver Bullet: Data Breaches in Higher
Education<https://library.educause.edu/resources/2017/2/searching-for-a-smoking-gun-chasing-a-silver-bullet-data-breaches-in-higher-education>
(currently available to ECAR subscribers only)

If your campus uses the Information Security Program Self-Assessment
Tool<https://www.educause.edu/security/assessment-tool>, please note that a new version was published in February that
includes mapping for the 20 critical controls.

Finally, don’t miss the third
video<http://er.educause.edu/multimedia/2016/12/video--4-it-leaders-debate-security---part-3> in our series where 4 IT
leaders debate the implications of information security being the top item on the 2016 EDUCAUSE Top 10 IT Issues
list<http://er.educause.edu/articles/2016/1/top-10-it-issues-2016>. These lively debates remain timely, as information
security is also the top item on the 2017 EDUCAUSE Top 10 IT Issues list<https://www.educause.edu/itissues>.

Now it’s your turn! Let us know how HEISC can provide this amazing community with new resources or content that can
help strengthen your programs and departments!

Thank you,
