Northwestern University IT-Telecommunications and Network Services (NUIT-TNS) is looking for an experienced (5-7 years
minimum) network engineer to join our team. This position will be part of a group of 12 network engineers who are
responsible for pretty much everything to do with IP networking at NU. The team takes care of design, configuration,
management, and operational care and feeding of routers, switches, wireless access points/controllers, firewalls, load
balancers, optical networks, intrusion prevention systems, network access control systems, and various and sundry other
systems that help everything work together (DNS/DHCP/NTP/RADIUS/etc).

While all network engineers are expected to be able to do basic troubleshooting and analysis of all of the
systems/services that we support (including taking turns in the on-call rotation), everyone also has areas of
specialization. We are looking to fill this particular position with someone who has experience with security-related
systems (firewalls, IPS/IDS, NAC) as well as information security concepts/practices and can serve as the subject
matter expert in this area. This individual will also work closely with the Information Systems and
Security/Compliance (ISS/C) team within NUIT.

Interested individuals should visit <http://www.northwestern.edu/hr/jobs/> and search for job ID 25669.

A couple of HR/admin-type notes:

1.) The position is listed as a “Senior Network Engineer”. This is a mid-level engineer position and does not have
supervisory duties, although a good measure of leadership/project management/independent work is expected at this
level. We are in the middle of a position renaming/realignment, so anyone who picks up discrepancies in the titles of
people who are currently employed by NU and this posted position should not be surprised. Specifically, some of the
people who are currently listed as Senior Network Engineers will be Lead Network Engineers under the new system, and
people who are currently listed as Network Engineers will be Senior Network Engineers. We are hoping to get
consistency across all the titles in the next few months, but those title changes do not reflect changes in
responsibility at the different levels.

2.) The job description has a bit in the minimum qualifications section that makes specific mention of extensive
experience with voice environments and managing a voice platform. While the network engineering team does work with
our voice engineering team very closely, and some familiarity with VoIP and basic voice concepts should be expected,
that bit in there is another result of the position realignment and hopefully will not deter anyone from applying.

3.) Currently the entire network engineering team reports to me directly, but we are also going to be hiring a network
engineering manager in the very near future who will lead the team and report to me. Stay tuned for that job posting
if you’re interested.
