it is launching.  The group resides in the Information Security
Office.  It will run a number of services such as Splunk, Qualys,
BigFix, etc., to enhance security and provide situational awareness
for Stanford's computing resources.

Description
 Information Security Systems Specialist is a position located within the Stanford Information Security Office which 
coordinates and oversees activities that serve to protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of Stanford's 
information assets.

The Information Security Systems Specialist reports to the Senior Director of Information Security Operations, which 
reports to Stanford’s Chief Information Security Officer. The primary goal of the person in this role is to manage 
systems and services that enhance Stanford’s information security posture by providing situational awareness through 
the monitoring, detection, containment, and remediation of IT threats. This person will be an individual contributor in 
a Security Operations team which works together to achieve this goal for the University. Individuals with experience or 
interest in leadership may be called on to lead efforts or back up the Director.

CORE DUTIES:

• Conceive, design, develop, install, optimize, integrate and maintain operating systems, utilities, and security 
applications software on computing systems.
• Gather, analyze and take action on data from security application feeds such as vulnerability scanning, configuration 
and compliance, web site assessment and monitoring, intrusion detection and prevention, log management, network 
analysis and enterprise antivirus.
• Troubleshoot highly complex problems.
• Perform capacity planning for system configuration, software services, network services, load distribution, and 
service interrelationships among systems.
• Engage in long-term strategic planning with regard to systems development and integration.
• Manage vendor relationships and cost effective hardware and software maintenance agreements with vendors.
• Identify applicable new technologies through research, collaboration with peers, and participation in standards 
organizations, industry groups, panels, etc.
• May work on University-wide task forces and committees related to strategic planning efforts for information security 
technologies.

Qualifications
 Bachelor's degree and technical work experience or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Understanding of information security operations applications and tools such as splunk, BigFix, Bit9, OSSEC and 
Qualys, as well as a broad background in a variety of operating system and technology platforms.
• Knowledge of system and network architecture and interrelationships (technical and functional).
• Knowledge of security trends and best practices.
• Ability to program in multiple programming languages on multiple operating systems.
• Ability to work in a team environment.
