Subject: [CIO] Information Security Council Strategic Priorities


Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to let you know that we received a great deal of input from CIOs regarding strategic priorities for the 
Higher Education Information Security Council (HEISC). After reviewing your responses, the following goals for HEISC 
have been established for 2014.  The council will also continue to address security and privacy hot topics as they 
arise within the higher education community.

HEISC Strategic Priorities



Strengthen Foundations
·         Strengthen communications and marketing of existing resources, especially to CIOs.

·         Enhance community engagement of information security professionals and CIOs.

·         Strengthen collaboration and coordinate conversations and activities with partner organizations such as 
Internet2, InCommon, and the REN-ISAC.



Continue to Build the Information Security Profession

·         Promote and continue to hold the annual Security Professionals Conference.

·         Expand and enhance a mentoring pilot program.

·         Create career development tools and resources for security professionals.

·         Continue to update and promote the use of the Information Security Guide.


Advance Information Security Strategies in Higher Education

·         Investigate building an Information Security Peer Review Program (to include benchmarking and maturity 
indices).

·         Establish the role of CIOs, CISOs, and HEISC as EDUCAUSE builds an IT Governance, Risk and Compliance program.

·         Create forums and encourage community discussions about future information security strategies in higher 
education.

In addition to your continued input and feedback, we encourage you and your information security officer to take 
advantage of HEISC resources and assist with current activities. Please let us know if you or someone on your team 
would be interested in volunteering for a HEISC working group (send an e-mail to security-volunteer () educause 
edu<mailto:security-volunteer () educause edu>). We look forward to continuing the excellent information security work 
that has been done by our colleagues over the past decade.
