We are using both: TrueCrypt for all drives that don't have hardware
encryption and Ironkey USB flash drives with a hardware encryption, on
both Macs and Windows systems.

If the USB drive can only have an encrypted partition that means you
need to have some client software installed on the computer to read it.
In that case, you may as well use TrueCrypt and whatever USB drives you
happen to have laying around.

TrueCrypt can also use a single non-encrypted volume, but make an
encrypted container on that volume. Then you can run the executable from
the unencrypted part so you don't need to have it locally installed.
It's still only 1 partition so there should be fewer compatibility
issues.

Does anyone have any recommendations for cost effective encrypted USB
drives?

I know the Ironkey USB drive is one of the defacto secure USB drives out
there, but we were looking for some lower cost solutions that we might
recommend to faculty/staff/students.

Key features:
--reasonable price
--easy to use
--Windows and Mac compatible.
--USB drive must only have an encrypted partition (some USB drives have
a non-encrypted and encrypted partition)
--size really doesn't matter - 2-4gigs should be fine

Thanks.
