I generally use RFPs for products that are over $25,000 or something that we really don't know much about (in that case, we usually issue a RFI first). We generally select a series of potential vendors and examine their products in detail prior to selecting a product. When we were looking at NACs, I looked at a bunch of higher education mailing lists (including Educause) and came up with a list of four products - Bradford, Cisco, Impulse, and Mirage (now Trustwave) - as having the most positive reviews and had the most users. We had already decided not to go with Cisco as we had the demonstration of the product and it did not seem to fit our budget in the first round of discussions we had with the manufacturers. We then examined the remaining products in detail. We are a smaller institution and I am not required to go to a RFP process for everything. Best, Terence P. Is it becoming more common not to use RFPs for security or IT projects these days for some reason or another? We're just starting to define our requirements and investigate vendors, and would greatly appreciate input from other institutions. Our NAC solution would be for both our administrative (staff/faculty) and academic networks/users. Thanks in advance! Lori -- Lori D.
