I found two conflicting definitions of "directory information" on the SHU website. The student handbook (http://www.shu.edu/offices/upload/STUDENT-HANDBOOK.pdf) says: "A student's name, address, telephone listing, date and place of birth, major field of study, participation in recognized activities and sports, photos, information on height and weight of athletic team members, dates of attendance, degrees and awards received, and most recent previous educational institution attended are directory information and may be released without the student's permission, at the discretion of the University, unless the student has objected to such disclosure, in writing." But the enrollment presentation given to your class of 2013 (http://www.shu.edu/events/upload/Enrollment-Services.pdf) says directory information is: Name, Address, Phone number & email address, Dates of Attendance, Degree(s) awarded, Enrollment Status & Major field of study Given that two different statements may have been made to your students, you should consult with your FERPA officer and legal counsel before deciding if photographs can be treated as directory information or FERPA protected information. I was curious to know what position other Universities have regarding the posting of Student photos on a web application that can be accessed by faculty and other students. Is an Opt out policy mandatory ? if there any FERPA or other privacy guidelines around the same ? Thanks, Anand
