Re: Does anyone know how Verizon's outbound, external mail (port 587) is going to work?

I'm not sure I fully understand your question and/or perception of the
problem. I believe they're going to block outbound tcp/25 from machines
other than their mail servers and their customers that have static
addresses. I don't really think the @verizon.net address will be looked
at in a particular attempt to send mail. That piece just doesn't make
sense. Mail sent from their servers and from static addresses on their
network will still be able to connect to your mail servers on tcp/25.

*If* you have faculty/staff/students that are Verizon customers, and
*if* those people are using Willams College e-mail servers (after
authentication) to send their mail, they'll either have to connect to
your mail servers on tcp/587 or use Verizon's mail servers while on
Verizon's network.

Good morning,

I just read Verizon's "letter to the community" about blocking
outbound port 25 in order to decrease SPAM egressing their network.

I am wondering exactly how this is going to work. Do we punch holes
in our firewalls to allow tcp port 587 inbound to our mail networks,
or is Verizon going to port translate destination port 587 IN their
network to port 25 as it leaves? I have tried to talk to Verizon tech
support, but I either get "What?!?" or "It's all explained in the
document". When I ask to talk to a supervisor, they are unavailable.

  Does anyone here know?
