Enterprise laptop backup solutions

I'm wondering if anyone else out there has a solution for ensuring users
who use laptops get good backups of their data on a regular basis.  Our
laptop users are in Active Directory, but they often end up logging on
using cached credentials or don't log on while on the network.  AD
profiles don't get reliably updated this way, even though users are on
the network.

Is there an enterprise solution out there anybody uses that can detect
when someone's laptop is on-line and begin backing up critical data
without user intervention?
