I would like to cordially invite you to attend the free Safe School Initiative Seminar held at The George Washington
University (DC) on Thursday, August 9th. The seminar is being conducted by the United States Secret Service in
conjunction with the U.S. Department of Education and co-sponsors, George Mason University (VA) and The George
Washington University. Of particular interest to this group is the discussion regarding the role the Internet has
played in these events.

As stated in the attached brochure, the Safe School Initiative (SSI) was conducted by the U.S. Secret Service in 2000
at the request of the U.S. Department of Education. The study included the review of 37 incidents that had taken place
between 1974 - 2000 and had involved 41 student attackers. The goal was to identify information about a school
shooting that may be identifiable or noticeable before the shooting occurs, to help inform efforts to prevent
school-based attacks. In 2002, the study was completed and the results of the findings, the successful application of
the SSI, and information on how to develop your own threat assessment program will all be discussed in the seminars.

Attached is the SSI flyer that has all of the requisite information for the upcoming seminars. It is important that
the individuals who attend this training are those that just might have to deal with these issues on a daily basis, be
it from a policy stand-point, or to address inquiries on how to approach these types of issues. To ensure that this
information is provided to the appropriate individuals, I ask that you provide this information to your colleagues as
well as to the students, counselors, and parents who wish to attend by posting the flyer and/ or forwarding this e-mail
to them as well as any other individuals you feel would be interested and would benefit from the seminars.

Additional materials such as books and interactive DVDs dealing with the SSI study will be available (free) at the
seminars for the attendees.

In addition to the information on the flyer, the speakers for the seminars will be:

William Modzeleski
Associate Assistant Deputy Secretary
Office of Safe & Drug Free Schools
