The overall goal of ITSO is to achieve the optimal level of confidentiality, integrity and availability of KU's information assets and systems while providing a safe and secure computing environment for research, teaching, learning, and the everyday conduct of university business. This position will be in the Security Operations/Services unit of ITSO. This unit is responsible for: Technical Security Control Planning and Coordination, Daily Security Operations, SOC Operations, Security Consulting, General & Technical Security Support, Monitoring/Intrusion Logging/Statistics, System/Application/Network Scanning,& Overall Technical and Logical Security Implementation. The incumbent will find themselves working on both small and large scale projects while assisting teams within IT and campus-wide achieve their goals. As information security is an extremely fast paced field, ITSO team members are expected to research new technologies and rapidly understand their uses and risks. To be successful requires excellent oral and writing skills, project management, strong people skills, and a results oriented attitude. In all endeavors the incumbent must demonstrate the highest degree of ethics and professionalism. Responsibilities and percent of time 1. (30%) Develops and implements detection activities to test network vulnerability to intrusion by hostile individuals or groups. 2. (20%) Detects, investigates, documents and reports actual or potential network security violations, intrusions or other inappropriate use. 3. (10%) Ensures the University network is secure, reliable and robust through design and development. 4. (10%) Performs special projects and other duties as assigned. 5. (10%) Reviews and maintains University of Kansas information security policies and procedures; works closely and cooperatively with other University staff members involved with information security and privacy issues; participates in ensuring security compliance with governmental regulatory requirements. 6. (5%) Supports the development and implementation of the University security awareness and virus management programs; evaluates security products and tests security systems performance; assists in planning, implementing and testing disaster recovery procedures; performs formal risk assessments related to network security. 7. (5%) Ensures that the University community is fully informed about network security issues; provides status reports on the implementation of network security activities. Responsibilities and Percent of Time (Continued from above as needed) 8. (5%) Engages in a planned program of professional development, coordinated with ITS goals and responsibilities, to maintain continual growth in professional skills and knowledge essential to the position. 9. (5%) Supports the network security incident response team as needed and other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications 1. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or computer related field, -OR- three years of computer systems or network administration experience. 2. Two years of hands on experience with IT systems in an enterprise scale IT environment. 3. Two years of experience with IT security programs, best practices, and/or standards. 4. Two years hands on experience with enterprise scale networking systems. 5. Five years network protocol (TCP/IP, ICMP) experience relating to both systems and networks. 6. Five years of systems administration and hardening experience on UNIX, Linux, and/or Windows Servers. Preferred Qualifications 1. Certifications in areas related to network management and security (SANS, CISSP, CISA or other Security Certifications). 2. Familiar with common Networking equipment (Routers, Switches, Hubs) 3. Familiar with other networking protocols (OSPF, RIP, IPX/SPX, etc).
