Re: DNS blacklisting campus wide?

I've been installing SpywareBlaster
(http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) on many of our
machines, and it seems to have helped a lot. Instead of redirecting the
sites to localhost, SpywareBlaster adds them to the Restricted Sites
security group in Internet Explorer. This prevents active-x components
from being installed from these sites, but still allows the user to
access content from the sites. I've been using it since this summer,
and haven't had any complaints about legitimate programs not being able
to install.

Subject: [SECURITY] DNS blacklisting campus wide?

Is anyone using a "blacklist" in DNS to limit access to spyware or
adware
sites by returning 127.0.0.1 for these, somewhat like what spybot Search
&
Destroy uses in the hosts file on a PC?

For example, using a list such as at
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt

Thanks,
Richard
