It seems that this is not so easy to accomplish. People with experience
on these cases and lawyers will give you more details, but this is what
I've learned for such scenarios:

I belive that in cases of child pornography, posession is what
violates the USC. So by taking posession of the hardware, the
University takes on that liability.

Don't quote me, IANAL and my memory is murky on this from a few
years ago.

Personally, I don't believe taking student machines into posession
is going to (a) get you anywhere further than if you asked them to
give it to you and "let you take a look, (b) not worth the
liability. What happens if it gets damaged in transport or in your
posession, and (c) nearly impossible given the staff/student ratio,
the fact that alot of organizations are requiring students to have
their own hardware, and the amount of incidents increasing.
