At the University of Notre Dame we have been running the Network
Appliance Netcache C1105's on our ResNet Network which was a 45MB
circuit. Approx 10,500 students. We still have the device which is
currently off-line following several changes to our network border, it
will likely be re-deployed sometime this fall.

The device is easily configured with a web based interface and the WCCP
protocol. Software is mature and feature-rich. The primary bandwidth
savings are about 28-30% of http traffic, which in our case amounted to
about 4-5Mbits of traffic, additional bandwidth savings from streaming
protocols real, windows media, etc..

Subject: [SECURITY] Use of web cache devices

A couple of quick questions, how many of you are or have run web
cache/accelerators in your networks? For those of you that have, how
big is your school, how big is your network pipe, and do you still have
it? We have been running a Cacheflow (now known as Bluecoat) web cache
for a few years with somewhat mixed results. Our current device has
EOL'ed and we are considering whether to replace it with the recommended
replacement that can also be leveraged as a security device of sorts -
at a high price of course. Any input would be appreciated.

TIA,
