restrict anonymous access

I've been working on looking at vulnerabilities and locking down our
servers and desktops...  One thing I frequently see mentioned is to
change settings to restrict anonymous access (KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;246261). 

Has anyone applied this to their servers or desktops? What repercussions
has it had?  From some of the descriptions I read, it could have a
negative impact on accessing resources.  Is it even a necessary security
measure?
